Maths and the Historic Environment

When we explore the historic environment, we ask lots of questions about the past. What was this place like? How has it changed over time? Who built it? Why was it built? How old is it? How is it connected to other places from the same period? Most importantly, how do we know the answers?

All of these questions are linked by a common goal: understanding the evidence that survives from the past. By studying buildings, monuments, artefacts and landscapes, we can learn what life was like for the people who once used them.

Mathematics plays an important role in helping us answer these questions. It can help us:

  • Collect, organise and interpret data from archaeological investigations.
  • Identify patterns and make informed conclusions based on evidence.
  • Estimate distances, areas and quantities to better understand how people lived and worked in the past.

Successful learning happens when children are actively involved in exploring ideas for themselves. Practical activities help children understand mathematical concepts and see how they can be used in real-life situations. Learning a skill and using a skill are closely connected. Children deepen their understanding when they apply their knowledge to meaningful problems.

The historic environment provides a wealth of exciting opportunities for this kind of learning. Ancient buildings, archaeological sites and historical landscapes naturally spark curiosity and encourage investigation. By using maths to solve real questions about the past, children develop both their mathematical skills and their understanding of history, making learning more engaging, relevant and memorable.
