Reaching Out - How Do We Improve Public Outreach in Commercial Archaeology?

On Saturday 18 November 2023, Odile and I were invited to speak at the CBA SE Annual Conference on behalf of Thames Valley Archaeological Services.
The conference focus was:

What is new from commercial archaeology in the South-East?

The talk was titled:

"Reaching Out – Excavation and Outreach in Angmering, West Sussex"

Our session presented the results of fieldwork and outreach carried out on one of our sites south of Water Lane, in Angmering, West Sussex. It focused on public outreach- why this site is the exception rather than the norm, and how it acts as an incentive to meet the challenges of improving community engagement in the professional practice.
The session encouraged a discussion among the speakers and with attendees on new ways of involving a wider audience and explore how public engagement can be routinely considered and included within commercial projects.
This was a great event organised by CBA SE and Sussex School of Archaeology and History and one that we were delighted to be a part of! It was such a great opportunity to hear some fascinating talks about recent findings, browse the book stalls and mingle with other archaeologists.
